What Is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is Apple's umbrella term for a suite of AI-powered features built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It's not a single app or chatbot — it's a collection of capabilities woven throughout the operating system, designed to make everyday tasks smarter and faster.

Critically, Apple has emphasized a privacy-first architecture: most processing happens on-device, and when cloud processing is needed, Apple uses a framework called Private Cloud Compute, which is designed to prevent even Apple from accessing your data.

What Apple Intelligence Can Do Right Now

Writing Tools

Available system-wide (in Mail, Notes, Pages, third-party apps), Writing Tools let you:

  • Proofread selected text for grammar and clarity
  • Rewrite text in a different tone (friendly, professional, concise)
  • Summarize long documents or email threads into bullet points

Smarter Siri

The updated Siri can now take actions across apps — not just answer questions. For example, you can ask Siri to "send the photo I took at the beach last Tuesday to Mom" and it will find the photo and open a message draft. It also integrates with ChatGPT (opt-in) for questions that benefit from a broader knowledge base.

Image Playground & Genmoji

Apple Intelligence introduces on-device image generation through Image Playground, which creates stylized illustrations from text prompts or photos. Genmoji lets you generate custom emoji characters based on descriptions or your own photos.

Notification Summaries

Long notification stacks from apps like Mail or Messages are automatically summarized so you can catch up at a glance without opening each one.

Photos Enhancements

Natural-language search in Photos now understands queries like "photos of Jake at the beach." A new Clean Up tool uses AI to remove distracting objects from images without third-party apps.

Device Compatibility

Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later, any iPad with an M-series chip, or a Mac with Apple Silicon. The computational demands of on-device AI require the Neural Engine hardware found only in these models.

What's Still Missing or Upcoming

  • Full ChatGPT integration in Siri — available but requires opt-in each time for privacy
  • Third-party AI app actions via the App Intents framework — still being expanded
  • Broader language support beyond English (rolling out over subsequent updates)
  • Deeper cross-app context awareness — Siri understanding your calendar, emails, and messages together

Should You Enable It?

Apple Intelligence is opt-in and non-disruptive — features are offered contextually rather than forced on you. If you have a compatible device, there's little reason not to enable it. The writing tools alone save time for anyone who drafts emails or documents regularly. Privacy-conscious users can review exactly which features use the cloud in Settings before enabling anything.

The platform is still evolving. Each iOS point release has brought additional features, and Apple's developer documentation suggests a steady expansion through the coming year.
